According to legend, the crown was forged by Hephaestus out of fiery gold and red gems. When Ariadne died, Dionysus threw the crown into the sky to immortalize her.

The brightest star, Alphecca (Gemma), represents the central jewel of the crown. It is an eclipsing binary star system, similar to the famous star Algol.

Known as the "Blaze Star," this is a rare recurrent nova. Every 80 years or so, it explodes and suddenly becomes visible to the naked eye for a short time!
