Ara

Ara, the Altar, is a compact southern constellation lying just south of the tail of Scorpius. Best viewed in July when it reaches its highest point in the evening sky. Visible from latitudes south of about +25° — excellent across the Southern Hemisphere and visible low in the south from the southernmost parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Moon-free nights

Recommended for the fainter stars and rich deep-sky objects (globular clusters) that Ara contains. Dark skies make a big difference.

How to find it

Look directly beneath the curved tail of Scorpius. Ara sits between Scorpius and Triangulum Australe. Beta Arae (mag 2.8) is the brightest star.
