BETA ARAE
The brightest star in Ara is a brilliant Orange Supergiant. It is approximately **650 light-years** from Earth and is 4,600 times more luminous than our Sun.
BETA DATASTING NEBULA
Ara contains **Hen 3-1357**, the youngest known planetary nebula. Observations show it has faded significantly in just the last few decades.
DEEP SKYNGC 6193
A spectacular open cluster of about 30 stars. It is the heart of the Ara OB1 association and illuminates the nearby Rim Nebula (NGC 6188).

Best months to view
Ara
Ara, the Altar, is a compact southern constellation lying just south of the tail of Scorpius. Best viewed in July when it reaches its highest point in the evening sky. Visible from latitudes south of about +25° — excellent across the Southern Hemisphere and visible low in the south from the southernmost parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
Peak Season
June – August. July is ideal when Ara culminates high in the southern evening sky, just below the tail of Scorpius.
Moon-free nights
Recommended for the fainter stars and rich deep-sky objects (globular clusters) that Ara contains. Dark skies make a big difference.
How to find it
Look directly beneath the curved tail of Scorpius. Ara sits between Scorpius and Triangulum Australe. Beta Arae (mag 2.8) is the brightest star.
