ANCIENT GREECE | THE MYTH

Andromeda was a princess of Ethiopia, chained to a rock to appease a sea monster. She was rescued by Perseus, who saw her beauty from the sky and saved her life.

964 AD | "LITTLE CLOUD"

Persian astronomer Al-Sufi was the first to describe a "smear of light" in the constellation. This was the first recorded observation of our neighboring galaxy.

1924 | THE GREAT DEBATE

Edwin Hubble proved that the "nebula" in Andromeda was actually a separate galaxy millions of light-years away, proving the universe is far larger than we thought.

Also known as **Alpheratz**, this star is shared with the constellation Pegasus, forming the "Great Square" asterism. It marks Andromeda's head.

The Andromeda constellation and its famous galaxy (M31) shine brightest in the autumn and early winter sky. From mid-northern latitudes, it rises high overhead during convenient evening hours — making September through December the prime window. October offers the absolute peak: high altitude, crisp air, and early evening visibility.

Star-hop from the Great Square of Pegasus or the W of Cassiopeia. Under dark skies the galaxy is a soft oval glow to the naked eye.
