On November 18, 2026, Voyager 1 will officially cross the distance of one light-day from Earth. This is a profound moment in human history: it means a signal sent from Earth will take a full 24 hours to reach the probe, and another 24 hours for its response to return. We are effectively operating in a 48-hour communication loop with a craft built nearly half a century ago.

THE SILENT AMBASSADORS

By the early 2030s, the Voyagers will likely fall silent as their power output drops below the threshold needed for their final active instruments. They will then transition from active research craft to "silent ambassadors." Carrying the Golden Record, they will continue to travel through the Milky Way for millions of years, far outlasting the civilization that built them.

THE LONG SILENCE

The Voyagers are in their final act. NASA’s engineering teams have transitioned into a "survival-first" mode. As their Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) continue to decay, the team prioritizes maintaining communication and thermal stability over scientific throughput. The goal is to keep at least one science instrument operational on each probe into the early 2030s, at which point the final, permanent silence is expected.
