THE MARTIAN MARATHONER

Perseverance recently made headlines by officially completing a Martian marathon—traversing over 26.2 miles (42.2 km) across the surface. Its mission is two-fold: conducting ground-breaking science in the hunt for past life and caching high-value rock samples for a future "Mars Sample Return" mission that would bring them back to Earth.

MISSION ARCHITECTURE / SAMPLE RETURN

BRINGING MARS HOME

The MSR campaign is a multi-step operation. Perseverance is currently caching samples in titanium tubes at specific locations in the Jezero Crater. Future missions will include a Sample Retrieval Lander (carrying a small rocket called the Mars Ascent Vehicle) and an Earth Return Orbiter. The lander will collect the samples, launch them into orbit around Mars, where the orbiter will capture them and begin the journey back to Earth.

MISSION UPDATE / JUNE 2026

THE MSR REBOOT & REALITY

As of June 2026, there is no longer a confirmed, funded plan to retrieve the samples cached by Perseverance. Following years of budget overruns and timeline delays—with projections reaching $11 billion and a return date in the 2040s—the original MSR program was discontinued in favor of prioritizing human spaceflight goals and a new, limited "Mars Future Missions" program.

THE MARTIAN MARATHONER

Perseverance has officially achieved a major milestone: it has traveled over 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometers) on Mars. This feat, completed in less than five years, demonstrates the rover’s unprecedented autonomy and mobility. While the original Mars Sample Return program has been cancelled, Percy remains a high-functioning lab on wheels, actively surveying some of the oldest rocks in the solar system.
