THE LAW OF INERTIA

At its core, this law describes the natural resistance of objects to changes in their state of motion. If there is no net force, there is no acceleration. Inertia is a property of matter itself, directly proportional to an object's mass; the more mass an object has, the more "stubborn" it is about changing its velocity.

INERTIAL REFERENCE FRAMES

The Law of Inertia is only valid within an Inertial Reference Frame. An inertial frame is one that is not accelerating—it is either at rest or moving at a constant velocity. If you are in a car that is braking, you are in a "non-inertial" frame; your body feels a "fictitious force" pushing you forward because the car (your frame of reference) is accelerating.

In the near-vacuum of space, Newton's First Law is on full display. Once a spacecraft like Voyager 1 or a probe on a trajectory to Mars has burned its engines to achieve a specific velocity, it will continue to move in a straight line at that same velocity indefinitely, without the need for further propulsion. This "coasting" is the basis for all interplanetary travel—we burn fuel to change our trajectory, then rely on inertia to carry us across the millions of kilometers to our destination.
