THE BARYCENTRIC DANCE
In most planetary systems, the center of mass (barycenter) is located deep within the interior of the primary planet. Because Charon is so massive (roughly 1/8th the mass of Pluto), the barycenter of their system resides approximately 960 kilometers above the surface of Pluto. This makes the system effectively a double planet, where both objects swing around an invisible point in space as they travel around the Sun.

In a standard star-planet system, the primary body is so massive that the barycenter lies well within its interior, making the orbital motion of the primary almost imperceptible. In a binary system—like Pluto-Charon or many star systems—the barycenter sits in the empty space between the two bodies. Both objects revolve around this empty point, creating a rhythmic, synchronized orbital motion.

EXTERNAL BARYCENTER
Because Charon is half the size of Pluto, their balance point (barycenter) is about **960 km above Pluto's surface**. They orbit each other around this "empty" spot.
