Acid-Base Equilibrium
Chemical Balance
Understanding Equilibrium. Acid-base equilibrium deals with the dynamic balance of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-) in aqueous solutions. Unlike strong acids that dissociate completely, weak acids and bases establish a reversible reaction.
Dynamic Proportions: At equilibrium, the rate at which molecules dissociate into ions equals the rate at which those ions recombine, stabilizing the pH of the solution.
- ⚖️ Reversible dissociation processes.
- 🧪 Governed by concentration ratios.
Bronsted-Lowry
Proton Donors and Acceptors. The Bronsted-Lowry model defines acids as proton (H+) donors and bases as proton acceptors. Every acid has a conjugate base, and every base has a conjugate acid.
The Conjugate Pair Rule: When an acid donates a proton, it becomes its conjugate base. When a base accepts a proton, it becomes its conjugate acid.
HA + H2O ⇌ H3O+ + A-
- 🔄 Formation of conjugate acid-base pairs.
Finding Ka & pKa
Measuring Acid Strength. The acid dissociation constant (Ka) measures how completely a weak acid dissociates in water. A larger Ka means a stronger acid.
The Formula: Ka = [H3O+] * [A-] / [HA]. To make numbers easier to work with, we use pKa, where pKa = -log(Ka). A smaller pKa indicates a stronger acid.
- 📊 High Ka = Stronger Acid.
- 📉 Low pKa = Stronger Acid.
Calculating pH
The Logarithmic Scale. pH stands for "potential of hydrogen" and measures the concentration of hydronium ions in a solution.
How to Find It: Use the equation pH = -log([H3O+]). For weak acids, you can approximate [H3O+] using the square root of (Ka * Initial Concentration).
• pH + pOH = 14
• [H3O+] = 10^(-pH)
- 📐 Scale ranges typically from 0 to 14.
Buffer Systems
Resisting pH Change. A buffer solution resists drastic changes in pH when small amounts of strong acid or base are added. They consist of a weak acid and its conjugate base (or a weak base and its conjugate acid).
Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation: pH = pKa + log([Base] / [Acid]). This formula lets you calculate the exact pH of a buffer system based on concentration ratios.
- 🛡️ Essential for biological stability.
- 🧪 Balances conjugate pairs.
